So, I just got my Mate 40 Pro the other day, phone looks amazong, it's so smooth and the camera is wow. So I started experiementing w/ solutions with Google services, I will say it is actually quite fun to find solutions here and there😂. I still like Google, my job depends on it, but it's fun to explore.
This works w/ any non-googled phones, in theory. I live in Canada, so Huawei/no google experience is slight better than the US, but absolutely abysmal compare to the rest of the world. Also, not much 5G is happening in Canada 😭 ...
Security wise, i will say: Email, Browser, Bank Apps get them from App Stores as much as you can (Aurora is fine, because it just pulls from play store) , and games and stuff you can let loose a bit. And bank, payment and government apps, only from official stores or OSS stores, absolutely no downloading APK for those.
So i will keep updating this one as I go, but here's what I got so far (right now I am running a NOH-NX9 , EMUI 11.0) :

2. Most Apps work w/ MicroG (https://microg.org/) , I will suggest install it w/ F-Droid, and handle it from there. However, you cannot login to MicroG, and map don't work very well ... so, i will suggest you waiting, but here: https://github.com/jcchikikomori/GmsCoreHuawei , install this instead of MicroG GMS Core will enable you to login using hacks from Vanced MicroG to login. I can login now, map worked, but that's it ... it's still under developement, but I get less Google Service missing errors now.
3. If you really need to run something dependant on GMS, I tried DualSpace, it worked the first 20 mins, then that's it; I also tried VMOS, that one takes too long to bootup and shutdown, it's Android 7, lots of App don't work there. So, solution?
   1. I use OurPlay now, that is provided that you can read Chinese. I got google pay to work in OurPlay (online only, tap doesn't work), I opened up my Stadia app and bought a game on sale, it all went smoothly. Uber also work now!
4. Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook apps work perfectly w/o GMS, and same goes w/ Chinese apps. Also, Reddit works w/ MicroG, you need to grab it from Aurora Store.

Also, here's some common apps I use, and how they changed from my P30 Pro:

Hello,
After having updated to the latest version of Vanced, I keep getting this error. None of the videos would load, and I kept receiving the error that I was not connected to the internet (I was). I cleared the data for the YouTube Vanced app, and now I get this error when I try to log in to my account: "Please check your network". I can play videos without logging in.
I also get the same error when I try to log into my account from Vanced MicroG settings > Add Google Account > Sign In: "There was a problem communicating with Google servers. Try again later."
All of this was working perfectly fine before updating to the latest version (MicroG 0.2.14.204218 and YouTube Vanced 15.43.32). I'm using a Samsung S7 with Android 8.0.0.
Any help much appreciated!

I'm a Mi 9 Lite user. (EU variant)
Today morning I decided I had enough with the YouTube ads and wanted to install YouTube Vanced. And as many of you vanced users know, you need to disable the MIUI Optimization toggle in order to get MicroG installed and vice versa. I finished the process and set up everything as you normally would.
What I noticed after turning the so called optimization toggle off, the permissions (I already knew this) and the overall aesthetic view of MIUI was changed. From the icons going haywire to some menus in the settings tab like for eg. the info page of any app. It looks really bad.
But what I didn't see coming was the performance boost I got. Yes, I've heard you get a better free RAM and stuff but on paper. I use Boost for Reddit. Boost always takes like 5 -7 seconds for me to load. But now, it's like 1-2 seconds. This made me really curious. I started digging more and I found my overall browsing speed has increased drastically. From searching keywords on the google app to overall page load times in my web browser.
So, to summarize

1. I turned off Miui optimization
   
2. I'm getting better performance.
   
3. My Reddit client got superpowers & page loading speeds increased times 2.
   

Now I know not much is out there about this topic coz I tried searching and found lik 3-4 posts. So, I just wanted to put this out there.
Please share your views if you too have turned this off! Useless Gimmick it seems.

Hello! I posted this in privacytoolsIO but I've decided to post this here as well for additional feedback. I just migrated from iPhone to Android and was given the S20 FE. What are some ways I can stay somewhat private while I stay on One UI? Right now, I'm trying to figure out what apps I can replace for Google Maps, Reddit, Gallery/Google Photos, but if any of you guys have additional things to mention, feel free to do so. Thanks for the help in advance!
Things I've done so far:
- Debloated all Microsoft, Samsung (besides galaxy store & Samsung pay), Facebook, and Google applications (besides Gmail, Google Play & Services, and Google Maps)
- Replaced Samsung Browser with Firefox (w/ DuckDuckGo) & Bromite
- Replaced Google Play with Aurora & F-Droid (Haven't disabled Google Play Store/Services as mentioned above)
- Replaced Youtube with Youtube Vanced (With microG enabled)
- Removed Google Photos and stored photos to local Gallery app
- Installed ProtonVPN whenever I'm outside
- Replaced Google Maps with Sygic (Just started today, don't know how long I'll keep this up)
- Replaced Samsung keyboard with OpenBoard from F-Droid

After having a Samsung J7 2017 for 3 years, I decided that it was starting to get really slow and I needed a upgrade. I like to keep my phones for usually 3 years and I like to keep the price always under 350 euros. Since I actually wasn't updated on the recent phone market, I got surprised by the amount of options that there are for about that price.
After scrolling trough the list, I saw that Huawei also had some great phones within budget, so I decided to check out the specs. I saw the specs, and said to myself that this was a really awesome phone for the price, and since I had already some trust for the brand (my first phone was a Huawei Y330), I decided to look more into it.
The benchmarks were good, the cameras were really really good, but there was one problem, software (no GMS).
At first, I thought that no GMS meant really only no Play Store, YouTube, Photos and some more apps. Since I actually used ApkPure, YouTube Vanced and MEGA for backups before, I didn't see a big problem here, and I also saw that there were lots of tutorials to install GMS on YouTube, so even if I wasn't satisfied I could always install them.
After some hours of searching, I decided to just go for it. I ordered it and got it next day.

1st day of usage: Other than no Google Account at setup, everything went as usual. I tested the cameras and saw that they are really good for the price, especially night mode. The software skin is way more modern that the Samsung one I was familiar with, the phone is way more responsive, and the game performance is way way way better.

2nd day of usage: I installed ApkPure, YouTube Vanced, Mega and the usual social media apps. I ran into the first big problem: notifications. Since notifications use Google Cloud Messaging, they don't work without GMS. At this point, I made a backup of the phone, reseted it to the factory settings, and prepared to install GMS.
​
3rd day of usage: I started watching some YouTube videos about installing GMS, and after trying many times and trying different methods, none worked. I spent a full week trying to get it work.
From this point I decided to start to use the phone without any GMS, and maybe try to fix notifications later. About a month later, I found MicroG and tried it on the P40. It went super smoothly and actually fixed the notifications! I finally left that the phone was ready for daily usage (I even made a guide to help other people install MicroG - Link to Reddit Post).

Its been 4 months since I bought it. First, I know that you can live without GMS. The problem is really the notifications part, but if Huawei can get all the main apps on the AppGallery, I think that Huawei will rise up again.
My final thoughts are that the P40 Lite is a really good phone, and if you don't really care about having to install some apps to get the notifications working, and you don't really need to use Google Apps, it's a great buy in my opinion.

I really do think that Huawei will be able to create a great ecosystem, maybe not as advanced as Google, but something that will cover at least most of the stuff a GMS equipped phone can do. It will maybe take some time, but I believe in you Huawei.

So I've been using Unrooted Vanced on my Note10+ for a short period now, i'm gonna say ~6 Months and had no issues with it other than having to Clear Data on MicroG and Vanced Youtube app after signing up for the first time and after any updates.
Then on the previous version i started getting issues with "No Connection" when i opened the app, I realised there was an update so carried out the update.
Now i could not get signed in, so after seeing the FAQ i cleared MG, Vanced YT many times, removed my account many times, re-did the sign in many times and a couple of reinstallations in the right order. None of this seemed to work. I then cleared the data for Google Play Services as well MG and YT Vanced and that seemed to resolve the issue. but only for a very short period
So the next day i got the No Connection again in Vanced, i cleared the data again on GPS and MG and Vanced YT - i Also Disabled the original YT App, and after 3 or 4 attempts of doing this it seemed to resolve my issue.
This again allowed me to show as signed in but only for another day, when i reopen the app the next day i have to clear data on these services again, sometimes this signs me out and i have to go through the process (sometimes multiple times) of clearing MG, YT Vanced and GPS again.

• I have the latest Vanced Manager, MicroG and Vanced youtube
• I've not changed my password since i had a stable working app
• I've got 2FA off
• I Have Battery Optimisation off for MicroG and YT Vanced
• I've removed, and re-added my account many times, and stopped and cleared data on the apps many times over the last week!

I've gone back to the normal YT app ... But I can't stand using it and would rather fight to get this to work that put up with the **** on there!
What am i doing wrong?! What have i missed?!

Hello! I just migrated from iPhone to Android and was given the S20 FE. What are some ways I can stay somewhat private while I stay on One UI? Right now, I'm trying to figure out what apps I can replace for Google Maps, Reddit, Gallery/Google Photos, but if any of you guys have additional things to mention, feel free to do so. Thanks for the help in advance!
Things I've done so far:
- Debloated all Microsoft, Samsung (besides galaxy store & Samsung pay), Facebook, and Google applications (besides Gmail, Google Play & Services, and Google Maps)
- Replaced Samsung Browser with Firefox (w/ DuckDuckGo) & Bromite
- Replaced Google Play with Aurora & F-Droid (Haven't disabled Google Play Store/Services as mentioned above)
- Replaced Youtube with Youtube Vanced (With microG enabled)
- Removed Google Photos and stored photos to local Gallery app
- Installed ProtonVPN whenever I'm outside
- Replaced Google Maps with Sygic (Just started today, don't know how long I'll keep this up)
- Replaced Samsung keyboard with OpenBoard from F-Droid

Third link goes to mediafire which requires a premium account to download the files. You can download every file individually but its very inconvenient. I don't even know how to use them even if I did that. There's no .apk or .apks file there.
Fourth link...? How do you even that website? All I can see are two older versions available on the right side of the screen and rest are just directories which again can be used to download every file individually.

I've been using vanced for a while, and really like it, however, over the past month or two I've noticed that some links refuse to open in Vanced. The two most prominent examples are:

1. Youtube videos displayed in Google search results
2. Some YouTube video links on reddit (post links, don't know if the same happens with links in the main body of text).

Here is an example of a post where the video opens in the browser rather than in vanced:

For me, clicking to open that video opens it in the "in-app" browser.
For some more context, I have the "open links in app" setting disabled on reddit, youtube is disabled (can't uninstall it on this device lol) and vanced is set as the default for opening various types of youtube links, such as youtube.com and m.youtube.com.
I'm running the latest version of vanced and microG (at least according to vanced manager I am)
Does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this, or, had experienced the same?

Essential is dead. Long life the PH-1!
The Essential PH-1 was a phone slightly ahead of it's time. (First post about hardware located here.) The first phone a lot of us used where we saw the potential of Android in its raw form. Without Samsung 'improvements' or third party addons that we have to fight to remove, we saw Android for what it could be. Now, we have to move out on our own without the benefit of Essential updating us month to month. We're out on our own for the first time in a long time no one to fall back on. It kind of feels like adulthood.
Without Essential's monthly updates, we could be vulnerable to various types of security problems. We could hope to depend on Google to protect us or maybe even an AV/anti-malware vendor. But, is that what we want though? What about our adulthood?
That brings us to MicroG. The virtual equivalent of our own apartment out on our own. No Essential. No Google. Just us all making our own way with a little local independent repair shop or mail in repair to rely on. It boots to LineageOS, no Google Play Store, no Google Apps, just F-Droid, and Android itself.
What is MicroG?
tl;dr MicroG is a open source replacement for Google Play Services. You don't need the privacy sucking, battery draining 'services' running in the background anymore just to run your favorite apps. Android sucks 10X more of your private data than iPhone. Those days are over.
A few years ago developers started looking at the Android Open Source Project as incomplete. AOSP can be used to build Android from source code, but it isn't very useful by itself. The propreitary Google Play Services and the APIs (Application Protocol Interfaces) they provide are needed for almost any apps. For Uber, you need Maps, GPS location, etc, among many other things like encryption. All of that needs to be provided in some form by the OS. That is where Google Play Services comes in to provide your location or some other information to the apps. If they were restricted, your phone becomes unable to run any of it.
So, what do you do if you want to run your favorite app without informing Google of where you are? These developers decided to write a replacement for Google Play Services. That became what we know as MicroG. The drop in replacement for Google Play Services on Android. They even provide a flashable version of LineageOS with MicroG baked in on their website here: https://lineage.microg.org/
This is the version we'll be using today. As of this post, it is LineageOS 16. That will change to version 17 or greater once it is stable and MicroG has been confirmed compatible.
Step 0.1) What can I expect from LineageOS with MicroG?
- MicroG replaces Google Play Services (opengapps)
MicroG supports more Google Play Store functionality every month. At this point apps like Uber, Discord, most games, and many others generally work flawlessly release to release. If you try to use banking apps or other similar "high security" applications, you may need to use the browser interface instead due to changes Google has made to SafetyNet bootloader lock verification. Your mileage may vary. The developer of the Magisk app discusses the changes here.
- LineageOS with MicroG allows fine grained privacy controls with Privacy Guard.
If you've never used LineageOS, Privacy Guard allows you to control each app's access to contacts, camera, audio, location, etc in a way that even Essential's Android does not. This works for all apps including Google's Waze or GCam. MicroG reinforces this by removing Google's ability to use Google Play Services as a way around privacy controls. Your phone only communicates the information to Google necessary to power services like Google Cloud Messaging for Push Notifications.
- Better battery life without Google Play Services
Your device will spend more time in deep sleep and less time scanning for WiFi networks or other tasks Google Play Services is using to collect data. That stops now with a reset of who is in charge of your phone. With MicroG, you don't need Google unless you add them to the phone.
- Support for Waze, GCam, Youtube Vanced, and others
Just because we got rid of Google Play Services doesn't mean we don't want some Google products.
Step 1) Flashing LineageOS to the Essential PH-1
As flashing LineageOS has been covered very well many times, we won't try to reinvent the wheel. Feel free to ask if you have questions, but the guides and information below are a good place to start.
First, get the latest LineageOS with MicroG installation zip from here: https://download.lineage.microg.org/mata/ (lineage-16.0-20200327-microG-mata.zip is the latest as of this post).
Second, download optional extras from https://download.lineageos.org/extras

Third, verify the sha256sum (lineage-16.0-20200327-microG-mata.zip.sha256sum and sha256 link below the optional downloads) using the function built into your OS. For Windows 10, this utility may help.
Before starting, you'll want to have the following in your download folder:

Step 2) Updating apps and adding to your new Essential PH-1
After the initial configruation steps such as connecting to WiFi, you'll be presented with a very familiar screen.
First, open MicroG Settings and look at the available options. Google Device Registration and Google Cloud Messaging are necessary for Android push messages/notifications. Google SafetyNet can be skipped for most usecases.
Second to get started, we need to make sure everything is up to date. Open F-Droid on the main screen, tap updates at the bottom, tap and drag down just below "Congratulations! Your apps are up to date.", wait for the repos to refresh, and once that is done it will confirm everything is up to date and ready. If anything needs to be updated, tap beside it to update and install.
Second, let's add a few apps via F-Droid:
AdAway (root only) (optional) - Blocks ads in all Android apps
Apple UnifiedNlp Backend (optional) - Provides WiFi location lookup via Apple's servers
Aurora Store - Google Playstore client allowing you to download Uber, Discord, and other non-free apps
DAVx (optional) - DAV Sync for Google Contacts or other syncing
Local GSM Location (optional) - Provides a GSM location database local to the device
Third, open/configure the F-Droid apps.
Open up AdAway, read the instructions, update the hosts file, and reboot. You're done until the next time you want to update it. I typically do it once per week.
Apple UnifiedNlp Backend is enabled in the MicroG UnifiedNlp Settings. You should have 4 enabled under the two menus (three under Configure location backends and one under Configure address lookup backend) with all optional providers installed.
Aurora Store is much like the Google Play Store. You can use your Google Account with it (read the warnings in the app) or use the included dummy account. Your mileage may vary. Some use it with a secondary account or similar.
DAVx can be setup using instructions found online. Sync with your favorite providers.
Local GSM Location
Set screen sleep to 30 minutes (DO NOT SKIP), sign up for the API key found in the app, and allow the database to process. This takes several minutes to complete and the app will not continue in the background. Leave it processing in the foreground and check it every few minutes until complete. Update once per month or as often as you like.
Finally, you're ready to add your apps and finish setup.
Step 3) Using your new Essential PH-1
First, Open the Phone app, tap the three dots in the top right, and tap Phone number lookup.
You can change the Forward lookup provider to a non-Google source, disable People lookup to enhance your privacy, or improve reverse lookup by changing it to something better for your region. Many users disable People lookup.
Second, add Youtube Vanced to the phone from https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-youtube-vanced-edition-t3758757 or https://vanced.app/
This removes ads from the application, disabled resolution checks, and gives you access to ExoPlayer v2 if needed for your system.
Third, add GCam to your device to enhance it with NightSight to take better photos in the dark among many other features. 6.2.030_TlnNeun_v.0.6d.apk from https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-tolyan009/ seems to work well with all features supported.
Fourth, add applications from Aurora Store as needed. "Should I Answer?" call blocker and others like the updated Essential camera application add to the user experience.
Optional Fifth, add Bromite (like Brave Browser, but open source) a Chromium based browser that blocks ads and supports modern security enhancing features. It installs via F-Droid at the repo here: https://www.bromite.org/fdroid
Step 4) Enjoy (until the OTA updates)!
Many times we forget to sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labor. You've done well! Your battery will last longer than it ever has, you're proviidng less information than ever to Google, and you're fully in control of your device.
Watch some Youtube without ads, visit your favorite website without worrying about your privacy, and open your favorite app without giving up control of your data all with weekly updates going forward.
Enjoy until the OTA updates arrive. Don't forget to update!

hello im a lurker for years in reddit and other apps. I installed youtubeVanced i followed tricks and tips in this sub yet im having difficulty 1. My youtubeVanced wont connect to internet even though i have 2. Whenever im installing microG (the yVanced is already installed) the yVanced instantly crashes and going home 3. I have no google account in my settings to logout with, no other google related apps thanks...

So i made a post yesterday about Australia as new in the list to show ads in our beloved YouTube Vanced. And you can see in the comments of above mentioned post about other countries where users are seeing ads.
It's not new, many users already reported it, it started 8-9 months ago when i started seeing ads after moving to India. And i believe i was probably the first one to report.
We already received developers answer as these type of ads can't be removed because of it's regional/server based nature (probably not accurate)

Solution

So enough information, lets talk about solution which is very simple, i just downgraded and ads stopped showing up, alongside you will loose newer features.
All of these version requires older microg (non-root versions only) and might be missing some newer functions
My current best version is 13.50.52 (everything works perfectly fine and confirmed no ads in Australia, India, New Zealand)
Older version which is mentioned in older posts was 13.12.60 ( playlists does not work well on this version anymore)
Somone also reported thet 13.18.x version were also free of ads, but i didn't tested that version for long cause that version can't hide stories.
So if you decide to use these versions and see no ads please report below in comments with your country and region.

I have problems with opening external YouTube links for example from reddit or with my browser. Vanced opens the Video (standard app), but it stays black and the loading circle is loading forever. I use the non-root version from vanced.app, V14.21.51 I experienced this on 3 different devices. A Moto G6 running with stock Android Pie, a Samsung Tablet 10.1 (2019) and my current device, a Samsung Galaxy A5 2017. The Samsung is running on official LineageOS 16.0, no gapps and therefore no native youTube app, no microg.
Anybody has an Idea for what to do?

Root vs Non root:
Features in root and non-root are the same. There is a slight difference in the Non-Root however. Since the package name had to be changed, the Google Play Services won't play along. This means that you have to install additional MicroG package, in order to be able to log-in.

I can't see the app (root only):
If the Vanced app is not showing in your app drawer, follow these steps: • Install regular YouTube app from the Google Play Store • Open the app until your front page shows up (not sure if this is necessary. Just reconstructing what's been working for others all the time). • Go to Settings > Apps > YouTube. It should show "Uninstall" on the top left. DO NOT Uninstall! Just see if it says that there! • Reboot • Go to Settings > Apps > YouTube. Now it should say "Disable" or "Deactivate". DO NOT Uninstall! Just see if it says that there! • In the same menu; tap on the three dot menu button on the upper right corner and tap on "Remove/Uninstall Updates". Now the Vanced app should show in your launcher.
The videos are not showing up in my history:
Make sure you whitelist *s.youtube.com in your adblocker. And non-root users need to check that they are not using a brand account due to MicroG bug. If you are, you need to merge the accounts to get the history working. Merging process will clean the current history. https://www.youtube.com/account_advanced
Chromecast bug:
Casting from Vanced Non-Root to various Chromecasts and cast enabled devices is currently broken, for now there is no permanent fix. Though you can always try starting the cast on stock and recasting from Vanced.
For those who have the issue with notifications:

1. Uninstall your current version of YouTube Vanced and MicroG for Vanced.

Video paused after putting in background play:
Your phone is putting Vanced in sleep modus. Go to your phone settings, battery, and try to disable power saving for Vanced.
Microg bugs/ login bugs:

Microg isn't that good of installing right the first time. Remove / uninstall microg. Download it again and try again.. could take a few times.
Couldn't sign in. Try to remove and re-adding your account.
Remove your microg Google account. Go to phone settings. Account. And remove the blue G account.
After changing your password I can't login again.
Remove your microg Google account. Go to phone settings. Account. And remove the blue G account.
"Please check your network connection" Reinstall microg. It can take a few times.

Not sure if anything like this has been done yet but I've been looking for a bit here and noticed a lot of ranting but not too much as to how to help it. I rant too so everybody has a right to. This is basically how we can support Asians and possibly other minorities so we can weaken honkies.
1) Media : only download YT movies never buy bluray. I mean I'm a huge comic book movie fan so I'll go see it in theaters if it really piques my interest. I use a VPN, go to torrent sites and download it. 1a. As for internet media like YouTube, I use an android phone as I HATE Apple. With Android phones you can use something YouTube vanced which eliminates ads so the YouTuber will not make any money from ads from you. Do this to white channels. As for Asian or other minority channels that are not anti Asian, support them by using the real YouTube app. I would like to add before downloading and installing YouTube vanced, you would need microg if you want to sign into an account. I use a burner account to sign in through that.
2) only go to Asian or minority establishments. If it's a wmaf owner, gtfo there.
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head here, but can someone please post tips what else we can do?
Edit: also, how do people here feel about having our own website? When we use reddit, we're basically giving money to them. It has to be a host that allows freedom of speech since I'll admit it there are content here that YT will say is racist but it really is just a reaction to the shit that YT does.

I got my new S8 phone today and I tried getting youtube vanced. At first I installed it and the first issue was adding my account but it kept saying network issue. So uninstalled it over and over again but deciding to uninstall YV and microg. Then reinstalled it but I signed in again but it was taking forever then after 30 minutes it just said "Try again! Session over due to inactivity." Even though I was active waiting for it. Any help on why it's not working? BTW I saw a reddit post for another issue on this where youtube vanced was acting weird for their S8.
