Just finished- it was a minor step down from S1, but for an easy binge on NF, worth the look. Overall, was a little disappointed; it started good and then middle-late eps were like wading through muddy water, but final episode somewhat redeemed it,
(Spoilers) In a nutshell, it is not as good as season 1. Season 1 captured much more impressive cinematography on the water and there was far more usage of the water. The one thing that concerned me going into s2 was the plausibility and possibly lack of compelling intrigue about a river casino, and although that was indeed an issue, the political aspect lead by Linney and the big politician at least made it interesting and gave it some smarts, an unexpected dimension. And the politician was a good add to the season as he kept playing a strong part in that side of the show. Garner was great in S1 and her talent is on display, but the writing didn't do her any favors as she is either screaming, saying F every other word, wielding a shotgun, , or in some other manic kind of state; what was really impressive with her in S1 was her quieter scenes and her facial reactions when she was slighted, thinking, or confused. Probably not a popular opinion, but Petty was the best actor in the season even though personally I hated his character, and the reason why is because of the wit, intelligence, and professional investigating he was doing on the case was clever and well done. The other surprise this season was the Snell woman, who in many ways was the second best actor behind Petty this season. She got to show her range and reveal her backstory. Now for the really horrible parts- the kids. If you thought they were a bad part of the show in s1, forget about it in s2. I actually literally began fast forwarding all of their scenes by episode 8-9 as I just couldn't take it anymore. the boy in s1 was actually not a bad storyline, but that was not the case in s2, and Charlotte's story is even worse; at least in s1 she got to have some fun and go to a boat party on the water and a swim in the lake. In s2 she unexplainedly is even more attracted to the Langmore kid, but they never actually hook up. It makes no sense why this would be allowed by the parents or why she would choose him out of all the kids she can be meeting. Finally, the show remained very unrealistic and far fetched, and surprising to say, this season was predictable in that despite all of the roadblocks and numbers-jargon that kept popping up in the political pursuit and lobbying, did anyone really think that the Byrdes wouldn't get the Casino through? Yet, all of that time was allocated to that as if the drama was supposed to make it seem like they weren't going to. Maybe in the first 5 episodes that part worked, but beyond that it was overkill and we got the point- it's like "how many more of the same faces does Laura Linney have to make for us to get the point that she's good at lobbying and reading politicians and their ticks?" beyond that point. On the other hand, episode 10 actually contained some satisfying surprises that weren't predictable, and episode 10 somewhat salvages the season because it was sinking ever since around episode 4-5. I can go on and on about the criticisms for this season, including editing, writing, convolution, repetitive nature, clichés, and just overall lack of any huge bombshell surprises (like for example, with all of this dark world full of evil, why not go all the way and have one of the kids kidnapped and held for ransom, or why not have Marty get shot or have him hanging by a rope at some point to at least try to get the viewer to think the lead character was in serious danger- at least in s1 he got his toenails pulled out/knocked off his bicycle/ tried to be killed by the Langmore brothers/and Del held guns to his head), but it would take forever. Still, for what it is-a decent production value, legitimate binge watching show on NF that comes with your membership- you can't complain as at least the cast as a whole showed up and delivered a solid effort. Lastly, I must say that this season solidified that Ozark is a Breaking Bad imitation. It actually uses the exact same scenes (and even the motivations for those scenes preceding them) on several occasions, but just not nearly as effectively. For example, the usage of the baby has zero emotional effect in Ozark because it is not the main characters' baby and the way the parents perished, then the follow up to how the Byrdes now have the baby has no impact the way baby Holly did. This is only 1 example, but it's just an obvious one. Watching Marty hold a baby that isn't his of the man he just killed is nothing like Walt and Skyler holding Holly. It's just interesting how the show uses these exact parallel scenes, but fails to make them dramatic. And because the show has warranted and welcomed itself to be compared to Breaking Bad, then these comparisons and contrasts are deserved. One of the biggest differences in quality of the two shows besides Cranston's legendary lead performance, is that Breaking Bad utilizes a very effective "slow burn" to all of its' fallout and story progressions. Magically, at the same time, the tension continues to mount even during the "slow burn". Contrarily, Ozark is zip zapping and hurrying back and forth with one conflict and resolution after the next without going into much further detail about how the major conflict got resolved (the slow burn); things just happen and that's the end of it like it's no big deal, whereas with Breaking Bad, the emotions of the characters and pain or internal conflicts surrounding these events are explored and delivered effectively. In Ozark, there is just so much going on, but little time is spent on "feeling" what the characters are going through emotionally and internally while it all happens. It makes for a lot of activity, but little depth. In season 1, at least you could get into Marty's head a little with what he felt about his wife cheating, guns being held to his head, toenails being ripped out, and the plotting and ambition of his business endeavors, but in season 2, only once or twice and only for a total of a couple of seconds do we get a glimpse at how Marty is internalizing all of these problems. 6.5/10 (Gave Season 1- 7/10) Note: This is an honest review and not posted to get likes. I just spent over 10 hours watching this show and this is an expression of my thoughts and feelings. Other viewers will surely have a different experience.
